Jessica Hagedorn

Hagedorn adds a unique perspective to Asian American performance and literature. Her mixed media style often incorporates song, poetry, images, and spoken dialogue.
In 1985, 1986, and 1988, she received Macdowell Colony Fellowships, which helped enable her to write the novel Dogeaters, which illuminates many different aspects of Filipino experience, focusing on the influence of America through radio, television, and movie theaters. She earned a 1990 National National Book Award nomination and an American Book Award.

Her work has been anthologized widely, including in Charlie Chan Is Dead (Penguin), and she co-edited the anthology Going Home to a Landscape: Writings by Filipinas (CALYX Books). She was a finalist for the O’Henry Fiction Award and received a Bread Loaf Writers Fellowship and California Arts Council Fellowships for her fiction. She teaches in the Bay Area.
